Where to find the gay bars and clubs in Madrid – Chueca

The main gay area in Madrid is called Chueca and is named after Federico Chueca who could be considered Madrids first gay icon.

The area spans about 1km north of Gran Via (one of the main streets) and east to west between Calle Hortaleza and Paseo de Recoletos. The main bulk of gay bars in Chueca are found within ten minutes walking distance of Plaza De Chueca – where the metro station is found.

Chueca is walkable from the ‘city centre’ (Plaza Del Sol) or just a couple of metro stops.

It is obvious you have arrived in the gay district given that the walls of the metro station in Chueca are painted floor to ceiling

Drinking with your friends on a sunny terrace or in a charismatic, lively bar is integral to Spanish identity, and naturally, Spain’s capital city is the best place to dive headfirst—or any other body part first—into it. Nowhere is this truer than in Madrid’s gay neighborhood of Chueca, where you are never at a decrease to find a place to acquire a drink, with a myriad of different gay bars to choose from all through the week—especially on the weekend.

Each bar has its own different character, so here are twelve of the crème de la crème to visit on any alcohol-fueled trip to Chueca—whether as the main event, part of a block crawl, or a precursor to a wild night destined to conclude with a drunken 7 a.m. club exit.

About Madrid and its gay life

With a population of 3.2 million, the Spanish capital Madrid is the third largest city in the European Union. The ascend of the city began in the 16th century under the Spanish line of the Residence of Habsburg, when Philip II moved the royal court to Madrid. In the 18th century Charles III contributed much to the economic upturn of the city by modernizing the widespread infrastructure.
During the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939 Madrid was heavily destroyed by air raids. After the end of Franco's dictatorship the so-called Movida Madrileña – a hedonistic cultural movement that celebrated everything shrill and up-to-date – began to emerge in Madrid. Pedro Almodóvar became its internationally best-known representative. Even today Madrid is a center of attraction for party people from all over Europe, it is more original, more ›Spanish‹ and not as

Madrid has long had a reputation for being one of the most welcoming cities in Europe to the LGBT+ community. This reputation obviously stems from the people themselves and their attitude towards diversity, but also for what is on offer for both LGBT travellers, locals and expats.

It’s quite prevalent for gay locals to sit in the bars for quite a rare hours, drinking and eating tapas before heading to one of the larger clubs for 1-2am.

Whilst drinking in the local bars can be relatively inexpensive, the night clubs usually have a cover bill, and drinks inside the clubs are often quite pricey. However, the cover charge usually
