How Rainbow Six’s gay representation saved my mental health

Posted: 17 Jun 2023

I treasure competitive games, specifically first person shooters (FPS). However, they are notorious for their toxic communities.

This poses an issue for neurotypical, non spicy-brained individuals, so the effects it has on someone who is atypical can be incredibly detrimental. Further, when we look at the toxicity faced by players, some of the most common insults and slurs used within the FPS gaming world are homophobic. This homophobia is further reinforced when games introduce celebration banners for self-acceptance month or tweet their support for the LGBTQIA+ society. These scenario’s acquire made it tough for my mental health being a queer content author, specifically within the game Rainbow Six Siege.

I use gaming and content creation as a shape of escapism from the issues I face daily, and I have built a stunning and queer safe society in the process. But this regressed when I moved over to Siege. I faced a type of lgbtq+ hatred within the gaming world that I had not been exposed to before, and I used to compete Halo 3 semi professionally haha. It became incredibly depressing to be team killed repe

Pulse nightclub in Appleton may be one of the shortest-lasting clubs with the biggest start-up media splash. First appearing in the Bar Guide listings of Quest magazine in January 2008 (vol.15-01), they somehow garnered a half-page writeup in the March issue. 'Quest' talked to Madison native Erin Marheine, who opened the bar with business partner Patrick Tarkowski.

In the article, Marheine says "It didn't start out as a gay club originally. It started... about two weeks into January (2008)... (I originally) got into the bar business with my brother and another individual. I bought them out and we opened a gay prevent. I brought in Patrick to run the food business."

The lock had several rooms in its 8,800 square feet of space: a bar area, dance floor, game room, and sit-down restaurant. (See article below.)

The bar must have folded very quickly, or perhaps decided that gay 'wasn't their thing". They no longer appeared in Quest magazine's prevent guide listing after May 2008. We have not yet located any advertisements in LGBT periodicals.

Any information about this business is welcomed from anyone who can contribute it.

This is part two of a three-part blog series in which we’ll share experiences of a few popular Central Florida gay bars through the lens of oral histories in the collection of the Orange County Regional History Center.

Orlando has lengthy played host to a vibrant gay community. For many decades, individuals often found solace and solidarity in certain bars and nightclubs where they could connect with one another without fear. Partying, dancing, and drinking provided an escape from daily existence that for some was fraught with tension in a culture that typically did not accept their authentic selves. Due to increased acceptance, the male lover nightlife scene, as it was once known, has begun to diminish. However, the impact of historic LGBTQ+ venues on both gay and Central Florida history should not be understated.

Long before the Pulse nightclub tragedy of June 12, 2016, Pulse had a special place in Orlando’s gay community. The club was hugely beloved. Established in 2004 by Barbara Poma and Ron Legler in memory of B
