'Love Island's Queer Cast Is Ready To Make Truths TV History but the Show Is Still Stuck in the Past

Love Island USA is never quick on drama, flirtations, betrayals, and steamy challenges are baked into its DNA. But Season 7 has something even more exciting: the real potential for queer love stories to take center stage. From the moment fan-favorite Chelley Bissainthe walked into the villa and declared her sexual fluidity, it was clear this cast was ready to shake things up. And when fresh bombshell Cierra Ortega kissed her during a challenge? Reality TV gold.

Despite heating up the room and our screens, the series still doesn't seem to know how to navigate sexual fluidity, something that holds back certain singles from being their most authentic selves (and creating truly legendary episodes of television). But as more LGBTQ+ cast members are featured on the display, it's clear the series needs to open the door to creating an inclusive space where literally anyone can fall in love — in the messiest way possible.

'Love Island USA' Is So Close to Ideal

While Love Island is always stacked with a great cast of singles,

Before I write what I’m about to write, please approve this confession: I have never seen a single episode of reality matchmaking app TV. However, I have read D’Vaughn and Kris Schedule a Wedding, a sapphic romance about fake dating turned real love on a reality TV show, about ten times. And I think you should read it too, but only if you love cherish and/or swooning, so only if you’re awesome. But that’s not why we’re here today. We’re here today to talk about Peacock’s Love Island USA, which apparently had a surprise fluid coming out and also now has a queer couple(?) on it.

There’s a contestant named Johnnie Garcia, and she came out as bi in the most recent episode, because she confessed her feelings to Kassy Castillo, who said she’s never been with a woman but was attracted to Garcia and interested in giving it a go. And then they smooched on the mouth in their swimsuits.

The main thing I perceive about Love Island is that the producers were worried about having gays on the demonstrate due to “logistical difficulties,” which is one of the more ridiculous excuses I’ve ever heard for not casting queers. Executive producer Rich

1. The boys’ platonic intimacy is very queer coded. It’s lgbtq+ in the best ways.

2. The least triggering part of the whole show is all the crossover. Yes I dated you two days ago and today my villa mate wants to explore the connection and that’s a-ogay!

3. As a lesbian, I find the lack of breakfast options to be infuriating!!

4. Taylor + Clarke being kicked off the villa is the woman loving woman blueprint. We get partnered and disappear from everyone and everything.

5. Maybe it’s none of what the internet is saying. What if Huda were simply a repressed queer person?

6. Chris’s sperm should be available for lesbians globally who’d like to hold babies.

7. What if Meg The Stallion’s debut, Austin Austining, and Chelley the verified bi baddie were planted soft launches hinting at a queer Love Island???? A gay can dream!!

8. You know when you run into your ex and their fresh boo sooner than you wanted? I’d like to start calling that a “bombshell entering the villa”

9. Nic + Olandria are a representation of you + the best friend you should actually be dating. Take that person out the friend zone

10. ‘Eat that kitty in the hideaway’ is not only a hit

Love Island USA‘s Kendall wasn’t the most popular houseguest in Casa Amor. But after his handset got hacked leaking explicit images to the public without his consent, the reality TV celestial body faced a wave of online vitriol, including homophobic slurs.

Worse still, he initially couldn’t access his phone to defend himself, but it seems fond he finally has access now and took to Instagram stories to respond. “What a way to get my phone back y’all. just want to address the content that came out from my past,” he wrote.

“That was something I shared to someone in confidence and trust,” he continued. “It’s unfortunate that it’s no longer private, but it is what it is. I wish to thank you all for the calls/texts to sustain me during this time. I am so grateful for my Love Island experience and I love you all for tuning in to watch my journey.”

Support is right. So many fans took to social media to rally around Kendall, saying that while they weren’t a fan of his on the show, “using that to upload homophobic shit is not okay and 2. Just cuz a man enjoys buttplay does not mean he's gay…that's all,” tweeted one.
