'It's important for the future': Openly male lover NHRA driver prepares to make history

Any number of things should have stopped Travis Shumake.

Nearly two years ago, Shumake had planned his debut into the frenetic, high-octane planet of National Scorching Rod Association kingly racing as the governing body's first openly gay driver.

As the son of NHRA Funny Vehicle drag-racing legend Tripp Shumake, the younger Shumake had grown up in that world, having attended drag races each summer at the Kansas Speedway and racing shifter karts with his father in the delayed 1990s.

In the decades since his father died in a 1999 motorcycle accident, though, something kept calling Shumake back to the sport — back to accompanying in his father's footsteps.

If there’s one film that’s got pulses racing this year, it’s  I Want Your Love. It’s the story of twenty-something singleton, Jesse (Jess Metzger) who is on the cusp of vanishing his San Franciscan life to move back home. The production has made waves in LGBT cinema not least for it’s employ of real sex scenes. We caught up with the bloke behind the controversy, Director Travis Mathews.

Renowned For Sound: Hi Travis, thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. So, first up, how would you illustrate the character of Jesse?

Travis Mathews: He’s your typical late 20s gay hipster who has been treading water for too many years in San Francisco. It’s caught up with him and he’s being forced to form some grown up decisions about his future.

RFS: Why does moving away from San Francisco pose such a dilemma for him?

TM: It’s a very San Francisco story, and also one that I think resonates with a lot of 20/30 somethings who’ve escaped the village and moved to their respective gay metropolis. If you’ve had that trial, and if you find yourself living hand to mouth in order to sustain yourself as an artist, there’s

Station 19’s Jay Hayden Reveals It Was ‘Hard’ For His Father to View Him Kiss Another Man on TV: ‘I Felt Weird’

As the heart of Station 19, Travis Montgomery has had his fair distribute of romances and heartbreaks. While the actor who plays him, Jay Hayden, isn’t gay in real life, the Station 19 celebrity has represented Travis and the Queer community well from the start.

Station 19 is ABC’s drama following the personal and professional lives of firefighters and other emergency workers at the Seattle Fire Department’s unreal Station 19 in Seattle, Washington.
