GQ: "There was a period of hour when a lot of gossip sites—specifically black gossip sites—would constantly say that you were closeted. They'd call you “excited” in a hot-tub photo with your teammates or simply just utter you're gay. How'd that make you feel?"
Odell Beckham Jr: "I've never had an opportunity to talk about this. Honestly wasn't offended. I've never once had no challenge with anybody who has their possess personal life that they live. I have friends who are gay. It was almost more funny to me. I almost messed with them even more. I own no problem with anyone's sexual orientation."
GQ: "I feel enjoy posts like that only contribute to homophobia in the black community. The idea that someone must be gay—or that being same-sex attracted is in any way shameful—because they're dancing or contain blond hair seems so small-minded."
Odell Beckham Jr: "Or because they're 'close with other men.' Even like little videos where they observe me leaned support or something, they'll say that I'm looking a

Odell Beckham Jr. is not a bloke threatened by toxic masculinity, so when various Carolina Panthers used gay slurs against him in a 2015 game while he was part of the New York Giants, he was unbothered. In the 26-year-old's new interview with GQ, the Cleveland Browns wide receiver opened up about the incident and all the whispers that he might be gay.

"I’ve never had an opportunity to talk about this. Honestly wasn't offended," Beckham said with ease. "I’ve never once had no problem with anybody who has their own personal life that they live. I own friends who are gay. It was almost more entertaining to me. I almost messed with them even more. It's like when someone gives me an ultimatum, I'm usually always going to go to the opposite way of what you want me to go. So when they would speak that, I would almost mess with them even more. I have no problem with anyone's sexual orientation."

GQ writerMark Anthony Green went on to indicate out that the fuss around his sexuality, particularly on black gossip sites directly contribute to homophobia in the black community or "the idea that someone must be gay because they're dancing or own blond hair." In a city known for its happy hour culture, summer can be an even better day to take advantage of post-work drink and eat deals. Interns are in town, summer Fridays are in full swing, and patios and rooftops are aplenty. Here are a few prime, non-comprehensive spots for an afternoon deal with besties, colleagues, and new connections.

Alfreda. Dupont’s Alfreda, a tribute to the chef’s grandmother, offers relaxed pizza and traditional Italian eats. The happy hour runs Monday-Friday 4-6 p.m., featuring $8 spritzes and BOGO pizzas. Few do spritzes like the Italians, and Alfreda leans in on five kinds plus one N/A spritz; our go-to is the rose and mezcal with grapefruit or the locally made Don Ciccio limoncello spritz with basil.

Lyle’s. Especially leaning into the spritz side of summer is at Lyle’s, fully embracing the fizzy ephemera of the season with the Summer of Spritz. The Dupont Circle hotel restaurant imagines cocktails from France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. Spritzes film limoncello and vinho verde. For those that hit Lyle’s every week during the spritz special—and get a literal st

Odell Beckham Jr. vs. Toxic Black Masculinity

A version of this post originally appeared on the author’s blog, So Let’s Talk About.

I aspire Odell Beckham Jr. never comes out. Actually, I hope the New York Giants wide receiver isn’t even gay. I wish he ends up with the flyest chick on the block, and they give joint interviews where she says she enjoys a man who’s entertainment and lives his existence and doesn’t feel the need to scowl 24/7, hunched over like a Neanderthal trying to shield his manhood.

In case you missed it, there’s an outing campaign in progress against Beckham, because over the weekend someone posted a video to Instagram of him dancing with a friend. (Well, the same people calling his video “suspect” already said he was gay due to similar videos, but now I guess he’s even gayer.) This sort of witch hunt is the reason why shadowy men and athletes still don’t like coming out of the closet, and black masculinity continues to make life more hard for all of us, regardless of our sexuality.

The response to this video is the difference between black masculinity and light masculinity in a nutshell. White men are allowed a greater range of expression before they are automa
